THE CARTERTON MEETING

RABBI WINS THE COUNTY CUP BUNNY MEMORIAL TO ATHOLSPEAR (By “The Watcher.”) Threatening weather and rain in the early ipart of the day did not augur well for the annual meeting of the Carterton Racing Club at Clarevillc . on Saturday, but the outlook improved rapidly, the sun shone warmly and the fixture was held under ideal conditions. The going was perfect tor the racing, and the attendance was good, including quite a number from Wellington despite the counter-attraction of the trots. Rabbi won the County Cup narrowly, his victory being in a measure due to H. Gray’s handling, and Atholspear won the Bunny Memofial. Mr. J. J. Corry’s stable, controlled by R.* Alexander, had a successful' day, winning three races, while Mr. V. Riddiford’s team under S. J. Reid won one race and was three times second. From'a financial point of view the meeting was also a success, the totalisator handling £10,031, against £13,393 last year, an increase of £2038. TRIAL PLATE. On the strength of a gallop in which he ’ was reported to have accounted for the Masterton winner Relation, the stable representative in the Trial, Projection, started favourite, but he was never in the firing line. Streamer, Dancing Star and Duellona were prominent early, Duellona and Dancing Star leading round the turn from Rule Britannia, Lady Gen and Streamer. Duellona led into the straight and won by twb lengths from Dancing Star, who beat Streamer by half a length. Lady Gen was fourth, followed by Painting and Pat’s Boy, with Projection and Grecian heading the bunch. The class was moderate, but the winner scored comfortably. CARRINGTON HIGH-WEIGHT. ‘ A poor start in the High-weight saw the favourites Austerity and Make Up get a decided advantage and they led from Handsome and Domestic Trouble. Down the back Balloon and Moepai, who had been badly served at. the start, rushed up, and the order on the turn was Moepai, Make Up, Handsome, Balloon and Austerity. Moepai led into the straight from Make Up and Austerity. Moepai weakened, leaving Make Up in charge, but Austerity came fast on the rail and ran him to a head. Moepai wds two lengths off, followed by Handsome and Balloon. It looked as if Austerity should have won. Moepai, better served at the fctart and ■ better handled in the race, would have been hard. Jumping riders being scarce, H. Goldsmith got the ride on Domestic Trouble, who put tip a 71b. penalty. WAIRARAPA COUNTY CUP. Rabbi started a hot order for the County Cup anfi duly won, but he only just squeezed home ahead of Full Mark, and it was as well for the supporters of the favourite that Gray was on top. Full Mark and Rouex paired in the running from Spearmiss, Rabbi, and Klrlana, ahd there was no change to’the straight. Here Full Mark shot ahead, and challenged by Rabbi, a keen struggle saw Rabbi win by a short head. Spearmlss was a length back third, with Copurageous fourth, then Vcsperus, Black Mint, ahd Rouex. Full Mark ran a good race and was unlucky to Strike the winner, CARTERTON HANDICAP. In spite of 51b. overweight, Footpad was the early favourite for the hack sprint, but was eventually displaced by St. Melba. Both were decisively beaten at the finish, lootpad showed out at owce and led clear of St. Melba. Acredlty, Shot Silk, WOrata getting chopped out.at the start. The order was the same into the straight, whore Acredlty challenged-and beat Footpad by the best part of a length. Dgrmod was a neck away third, with St. Melba fourth, then Dainty Ways, Myola, and Weriita. The winner was a surprise packet for the favourites. Dermod was the unlucky runner. . BUNNY MEMORIAL. / . Historic was made a solid favourite for the open sprint, but after a great effort tne distance was just too short. Historic soon tailed off nt the start, Veronese leadalong at a sound pace from Dobbin, Kllmezzo, Quantum,, and Athol-

spear. Historic put in a great run round the turn, where the field closed up. Veronese and Dobbin were still in charge with a furlong to go, but then Atholspear and Historic closed with them, Atholspear winning by the best part of a length, while Historic got up for second by a ueek from Veronese and Dobbin, third money being given the latter. Wanderlust aud Borsalene were uext. Historic made a great effort and was most unlucky. He got caught fn the tapes at the start, but even then would have won had he not been forced out wide on the turn. It was a good rousing gallop in view of the New Zealand Cup. lie was going very strongly at the finish. Atholspear also came well from the back aud won like a good horse. ;Veronese is improving rapidly. Dobbin had every chance. Borsalene aud Wanderlust ran fair races. TARATAHI HANDICAP. Imateagirl, second last In the hack seveu when they settled down, came solidly at the finish and won decisively. Pari, Royal Opera, Guide Light and Money Mint piloted the field early. Royal Opera and Money Mint had charge on the turn from Patearoa, Push. Pari, Vlnella, Streamer and Tourist. The last-named was pushed off the course turning for home where Royal Opera and Push joined issue. Then Imateagirl swept up with a wet sail and won by nearly a length from Push, who bent Royal Opera by a length. Pari was fourth followed by Balloon and Shortly. The winner put up a solid performance. Royal Opera was solidly backed and had every chance. Push is improving. MAUNGARAKA .HANDICAP. Hol de Vai was backed as a certainty In the open seven and duly landed, scoring nicely after being in behind the leaders all the way. Rameses took up the running from Royal Game, Roi do Vai, Moutoa Treasury, and King Midas. The order was the same into line, wbeu Roi de Vai came on and won by a length and a half from Rameses, who beat Moutoa Treasury by nearly two lengths. Miss Ransom was fourth, and then came King Midas and Billion. The winner scored without serious effort. King Midas ran a good race for the first up of the season. ELECTRIC HANDICAP. In the absence of Banket, Hunting Boy was made a solid favourite in the concluding event. He won al! the way. He was attended out. of the barrier by Higli Society, Rule Britannia, Acreline, and Le Champ. Hunting Boy was clear tn a furlong and led Into the straight, where Acreline looked dangerous. She weakened, however, and Rule Britannia finished on to get within a length of Hunting Boy at the post, with High Society a similar distance away third and Acreline fourth with Le Chnmp next. The winner won easing up. .Rule Britannia. a hnlt-brother by Chief Ruler to Deluge, had run unplaced earlier tn tile dav in the Trial Stakes and was improved by' the race. High Society had every chance, and Is not showing his promise of last season. DETAILS OF THE RACING TRIAL PLATE, of 130 sovs.: Second 20 sovs.. third 10 sovs. All 8.8. Six furlongs. 6 Dr. H. A. Knapp, Awapuni.) NOTES FROM RICCARTON SOME FAST GALLOPS PRICKLES BREAKS tiOWN Dominion Special Service. Christchurch, November 2. Although a number of horses were away at Motukarara, there was a fair amount of work at Rlccarton on Saturday. The course proper with trestles 40 feet out was again available, but most trainers used the plough, which was well watered and provided good going. Tho proceedings were marred to a\certain extent" by the unfortunate breakdown of Prickles. She and .Semper Paratus started off together from the seveut’urlong post on the plough, ahd in passing two other horses which were being pulled up and were on their wrong side of the track, Prickles had to be steadied and was put out of her stride. A little further on nearing the three-furlong post her rider, C. Emerson, heard something crack and the filly narrowly missed falling. Emerson at once dismounted, and it was at once seen that she was in a' bad way. She was walked off the course to her stable after a lot of trouble and re-, eelved veterinary treatment. The trouble is in one of tho front legs, and it Is feared that the consequences will be serious.

Semper Paratus completed his task alone in Iniin. 34sec. ' Chide, joined by Starshooter over a mile, was allotted a solid mile and a half task on the course proper. He ran the last mile lu Imin. 44sec., and the concluding half in 52 2-ssec., the full journey being traversed in the good time of 2miu. 37sec. Chide was going very well at the linish, and was responsible for what was considered a very satisfactory Cup trial. Starshooter also pleased and was up with his mate throughout., Gregt Star, with L. J. Ellis in the saddle, registered an attractive performance over six furlongs on the course, reeling off the distance iu Imin. 15 3-ssec„ the last half taking 52 2-ssec. Malmsey, assisted by Miss Badbury for three furlongs, galloped six furlongs on the plough iu Inilu. 18sec. Vertlgern showed a burst of speed by covering live furlongs on the plough In Imin. 2 3-ssec. Freehold was timed to run five furlongs on the plough In Imin. ssec., but the pace was not on early and he strode over the last three furlongs in 3(1 3-ssee. Consent covered the game ground in Imin. 4sec. Cashier was on the track, but not galloped. He has not done well lately and is a doubtful starter for the New Zealand Cup. Red Heckle was responsible for a smart effort over six furlongs on the course, the time being a fraction under Imin. 15sec., the best of the morning. King MUsket finished slightly better than Pharaoh and Tarquinius "'after, galloping four furlongs down the straight iu 50sec. The first-named’s performance was not attractive from a Welcome Stakes point of view. He is, however, to contest the event and will probably be ridden by C. Emerson, Honour and Jaloux were associated in a mile and a quarter gallop on the plough, but owing to a fog it was not possible to time them the full distance. Jaloux led his companion until a furlong from home, where Hon’our joined him and there was not much between the pair at the finish. The last mile took jmin. 45sec. Honours display was quite satisfactory, but Jaloux drew attention to his future prospects by his good showing, especially by his work over the final stages. Praise and another untried two-year-old, Greenaway, hopped oft together at the foiir-furlong barrier and ran home, the straight half-mile in 51sec. Praise was not out to make time in the first part of the journey, but showed her ability to gallop over the last furlong and finished well. Caterpillar comfortably traversed five furlongs on the plough in Imin. Usee. The two-jlear-old Tenterden sprinted two furlongs along the back in 25 l-ssec. Pangolin, Gala Day, ' Toontyvara and After Teu all gave good displays in schooling tasks over four hurdles. 'C.J.C. SCRATCHINGS By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, November 2. Coon Song was scratched for all engagements at the Canterbury Jockey Clubs meeting at I) o'clock this morning.
