High Svce’s winnings now total £18,588. Phar Lap’s total winnings amount to £14,711. [The supporters of Nightmarch in the Melbourne Cup should not be downhearted over hfs third in the Melbourne Stakes. It is astonishing the number of Melbourne Cup winners who have finished third in the Stakes-on Saturday and gone on and won the Cup on the Tuesday. As a matter of fact the position this year is identical with that of twelve months ago. Strepbon curried all before him just as Phar Lap was doing and Statesman finished third in the Melbourne Stakes. Yet in the Cup the crack three-year-old had to strike his colours to the older horse. History has a'wonderful habit of repeating it-self.-Un 1927 Spearfelt finished fourth in the Stakes and won the Cup. In 1926 Manfred. reckoned by competent judges the best three-year-old ever seen in Australia, won the ■ Derby with Windbag third In the Stakes, yet Windbag proved the sturdier horse at the end of the gruelling two miles of the Qjip. The list of third horses in the Melbourne Stakes that have won the Cup goes buck a long way, but sufficient has been quoted to indicate that despite Phar Lap’s apparent mortgage on the race the records favour Nightmarch.— "The Watcher.”]
