PIG BREEDING

OFFICIAL WEIGHTS. Palmerston North, November 1. Rumour of the discontinuance of the subsidy of id. per lb. being paid by the Government on export pigs, caused the Manawatu-Oroua Pig Breeders’ Association at its meeting yesterday to decide to write Dr. Reakes, Director-General of Agriculture, to ascertain the true position of affairs. A letter was received from the Department of Agriculture stating that consideration was being given to the request of the association to continue the pigweighing experiments’for another year. A resolution to call a conference of Farmers’ Unions. Pig Breeders’ Associations, and all other Interested parties at a later date was passed on Mr. Croucher reporting that the Dairy Farmers’ Union had considered the marketing scheme as outlined. There was some discussion regarding the official weighing of pigs live weight in the baconer classes at the show, It being considered that the maximum live weight of 2701 b. should be strictly enforced. The chairman maintained that the recognised standard throughout the world was 1501 b. dead weight and the limit live weight 270 lb. He thought that the practice of breeding fat, heavy pigs should bo discouraged. The names of Messrs. J. McLennan, of Massey College, and R. M. Brown, of Tiakitahuna, arc to be sent to the council as men qualified to judge Large White and Large Black classes at the show. •
