BRITISH PREMIERS
GIFT OF PORTRAITS A collection of mezzotint portraits of British Prime Ministers from Walpole to the present day is to be presented to the New Zealand Parliament by Mr. Ernest Makower, chairman of directors of Messrs. Makower, McBeath and Company. A cablegram announcing the gift has been received from the High Commissioner (Sir James Parr) by the Prime Minister (Rt. Hon. Sir Joseph Ward). Sir James Parr states that the collection is identical with those Mr. Makower has presented to the London Museum and to the Australian Parliament Mr. Makower is now building up a similar collection for presentation to Canada and South Africa. “I am forwarding the collection forthwith,” adds Sir James Parr. “I cannot speak in high enough terms of its interest and beauty. It will form a most valuable permanent addition to the amenities of the House.” The Prime Minister has cabled the following reply: “Please convey to Mr. Makower an expression of the sincere thanks of the Government for his generous gift. I will make his action known to the House and to the public generally.” ___________
