BRITISH SAILORS’ SOCIETY

LABOUR DAY PICNIC. Although the weather did not appear too promising, the Sailors’ Society decided to go for the Labour Day picnic last Monday, and a band of seamen and workers left by motor-buses for .Maori Bank, where a very happy time was spent in sports, games, etc. Luncheon and tea were served under the trees. The ride back to town was a musical one, the men singing from the time Maori Bank was . left until the Institute was reached about 7 p.m. Before leaving cheers were given for Dlr. and Mrs. Qulnn for their kindness in providing such a fine place for.the picnic, also for their kindness in .supplying a quantity of milk and-cream for the day. During the day a football match was. played between a team from the Tamaroa and the costal men, which resulted in a win for the Tamaroa by 6 goals to 2. , The prizes, which were donated by one of the firms in the city, were presented by .Mrs. A. In the evening a fine entertainment was arranged, nnd there was a packed hall. Each Item was greeted with applause, the performers having to respond with numerous encores. Supper was served by the young lady workers, and a very happy time brought to a close with the singing ot the National Anthem. Hems were contributed by: Mrs. Rosenthal, Misses Delores Harris, Flo Monnlian. Sadie Hallett, Betty Itosenllial. and Miss Esme Crow.. Messrs. V:il Jones. J. Anderson. D. 11. Jauncey. E. O. Stokes, and C. Harcourt. .Miss B. Ferguson was the accompanist.
