PUBLIC WORKS OFFICERS
MINISTER REPLIES TO
CRITICS
Speaking at a farewell yesterday* to an engineer of the Public Works Department (Mr. J. E. L. Cull), who has been appointed professor of engineering at Canterbury College, the Minisrer of Public Works (Hon. E. A. Ransom) mentioned that from time to time the Department was faced with very severe criticism regarding its officers and their work. It was said that the estimates could not be relied on and that some of the construction work did not give satisfaction. “Well,” said the Minister, “the answer to that criticism is found in the fact that private employers are overanxious to obtain whenever possible our best engineers, accountants and other officers.”
