A ROSENEATH WANT

WIDENING THE CRESCENT COUNCIL URGED TO DO WORK The condition of The Crescent, Roseneath, was the subject of a protest at the annual meeting of the Eastern Suburbs League last night, when it was decided to urge the widening of this section of road upon the City Council. Mr. C. Turnbull introduced the matter by stating that the City Council had done a good deal of work in Grafton Road and Carlton Gore Road,, which was the way out to the suburbs, but travelling north to the city the route was via the Crescent. There had been reports for months past that the widening was to proceed, but at present there was no indication of anything being done. As a main arterial highway it should receive proper attention. Mothers of children were quite worried about the danger for lack of footpaths. Some people in the Crescent were sending their children to Hataitai School, to avoid the danger in sending them to Roseneath School through the Crescent, although it was a much greater distance away. Motor-cars went down at speeds from 14 to 20 miles an hour and would often skid on the loose metal when turning the corner. An excellent job had been made of Grafton Road. Mr. 11. D. Bennett haC told them when chairman of the. Works Committee that he considered it one of the most dangerous pieces of road in the city. He moved “That the League urge upon the council that it complete the long-overdue widening of the main highway through from Oriental Bay to Hataltat. with particular reference to the Crescent.”

Mr. 11. R. Searle seconded the motion and referred to the parking of ears in the Crescent, which was; again becoming a source of danger.

Mr. T. M. Donovnn drew attention to the difficulty large vehicles experienced In turning out of Palllser Road Into Graf ton Road, as they often had to reverse to get round

Mr W. R. Palmer suggested that the Education’ Board be written to In regard tn the school children. ‘‘The buses go down the Crescent and rattle like a lot of old tins.” said Mr. P McLaren. The motion was carried and it was decided to refer the matter of the school •'hlldren to the Roseneath School Committee.
