HOCKEY

LADIES’ TOURNAMENT SECOND DAY’S PLAY By Telegraph—Tress Association. Gisborne, August 30. In good weather the New Zealand ladies' hockey tournament was continued to-day, with the grounds in good order, and before an attendance of about one thousand. The following were winners: Section A: Poverty Bay A, Ruahine, Southland. Section B: Canterbury, Hawke’s Bay, Auckland B. Details are as follow: SECTION A. Ruahine (0) beat Bush (0). Although providing little combination and relying on judicious off-side play, Bush held a strong Ruahine team till half-time, when the score showed Ruahine one goal up. In the second half Bush tired, and Ruahine, maintaining the pace, ran their opponents off their logs and notched another live goals, the final score being Ruahine, 6; Bush, 0. Miss Harham was most conspicuous for Bush, while Misses Loader, Bailey and Anderson played brilliantly for Ruahine. For Ruahine. Misses Bailey (2). Loader (2) and McKinnon scored. Poverty Bay A (3) beat Auckland A (2). The Poverty Bay forwards proved too fast for Auckland A, though the visitors’ backs were superior. Porerty Bay caught the Auckland backs napping in the first hnlf. scoring (wo goals in (he first ten minutes. Ten minutes before half-time Auckland scored, but Bay goaled' again after the interval. Auckland livened up and front a penalty. Miss Lowe (Auckland) beat the goalie after a great tussle. Auckland appeared to be troubled by the fast grounds, and only showed flashes of their tyue form. For Auckland, Miss Lowe and Mrs. Hamiiierman scored, and .Mrs. Nicol hud Misses Ruru and Nepia scored tor Poverty Bay. Southland (5) beat Rotorua (0). Although having the better of play territori ally, Rotorua lacked scoring forwards in the game against Southland, and went down by five goals to nil. Southland were seldom out of their own half, but each time they invaded the Rotorua circle they scored. The shooting of Misses- McIptyre and Hislop was deadly. Rotorua's goalie was weak, but Miss _ Davidson showed excellent defence. Miss Hislop scored three goals, and Miss Mclntyre two for Southland.

SECTION B. Canterbury (11) beat Wairarapa (0). Canterbury defeated Wairarapa easily in a walk-over match. The losers were outclassed, the scores coming for Canterbury in surprising profusion. In spite of its one-sidedness, the match was productive of some pretty hockey, and was well worth watching.. Wairarapa, however, were up against a hopeless proposition from th start. The scorers were: Misses Schluter (5), Milllichamp (5), and Parsons. Hawke’s Bay (5) beat Eastern Southland (2). Hawke’s Bay had a hard tussle against Eastern Southland, but finally ran out the winners. The Southland forwards lacked combination and finish, but played well individually. The Hawke's Bay full-backs played splendidly, and it was a pleasure to watch the way the forwards combined. For the winners the ball was netted by Misses V. Cook (2) and R. Jones (2). while Misses 11. Crawford and K. Bond goaled for the losers,

Auckland B (2) beat Poverty Bay 15 (1). The game was fairly even all the way through, all the scoring being done in the first half. For the winners Misses Wylde-Brown and Bodds netted, while Miss B. Ardern scored for Poverty Bay. SUMMARY OF WINS.

After two days’ play the position is as follows: —Section A : Poverty Bay A and Ruahine, 2 wins; Southland, one win and one game to play. Section B; Canterbury, 2 wins; Wellington, one win and one game to play. NOTES ON THE PLAY RUAHINE TOO GOOD FOR BUSH Dominion Special Service Gisborne, August 30. After a fair showing against Rotorua tlie first day, Bush was expected to extend Ruahine in the second match, but although in the first half they kept the Ruahine score down to one goal, their defence crumbled in the second half and the final score was six to nil against them. Mrs. Better in goal gave a polished display In the early stages anil was the last to lose morale before the steady bombardment by tlie Ruahine forwards, but even she was badly beaten at the finish. The winning ide showed dash and finishin attack and tlie halves kept the forwards well supplied with the ball. Mrs. Loader and Misses F. Bailey and McKinnon were the stars among a fast and snappy for-

ward line, Miss Bailey scoring three goals. The best of the Bush forwards was Mrs. Gregory, who on the right wing repeatedly battled her way through the opposing full-backs, but always was robbed at the critical moment by Miss Brabazon, who played a sterling defensive game for the winners. Miss N. Bailie also was good in the Bush forwards. Miss Harmon, right half-back, was also very capable, her tackling being crisp and her hitting welljudged and timed. The other half-backs were not up to the same standard, and tackled slowly. Miss Piper was best of the full-backs. Wairarapa v. Canterbury.

After their fairly substantial win yesterday. Wairarapa were expected to make a fairly interesting game of it against Canterbury, but the defenders of the championship have some excellent scoring forwards and overran the Wairarapa defence, knocking up seven goals in the first halt and finishing up with the great total of, eleven goals to nil Misses Schluter and Mldlichamp each scored five goals and Miss Parsons one. A few of the Wairarapa forwards did some effective work, hut did not get a,chance to break away often, Miss F. Booth,- inner right, gave the best display for Wairarapa. Miss E. Cook, Wairarapa forward, retired iu the second spell with an injured nose., Wellington had a bye.
