AMAZING EPISODE
WOMAN’S STORY NOT CREDITED.
Australian Press Association.
Paris, August 28. Gloria McAllister, who claims to have been born in Australia, figured in an amazing episode. She was found semi-conscious on the beach at Monta-
livet, and told the gendarmes that she
had been in the water thirty hours. ’ She said that she left Newcastle on Saturday for Shanghai as a stewardess. She felt ill after Sunday night’s festivities, went on deck, and fell from the railing as the ship lurched. She grabbed a piece of timber, and floated all night long and all Monday. She saw at dawn on Tuesday the Cordran lighthouse and swam to it, but the current carried her twenty miles south. The gendarmes were inclined to believe the tale, but pilots and fishermen are sceptical. They say that the steamer passed five miles from the coast, and the currents bear north, not south. Furthermore, there was a rowing boat at sea off the shore last night.. Inquiries are continuing : - London, August 28. The -Manchester Guardian” says that the British Consulate, investigating Gloria McAllister’s story, discovered exaggerations and contradictions. They suggested that she escaped from a nursing home nearby. Lloyd’s declared that no vessel named the Eagle is trading between Newcastle and Shanghai. _________
