AMATEUR ATHLETICS

CYCLE ROAD RACING Palmerston North, August 30. A special meeting of the Manawatu Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club decided to-night to leave the arrangements for the annual cycling race between Palmerston North and Wanganui in the hands of the Wanganui Club. This means that the race, which takes place on October 5, will finish at the latter town. In addition, the club decided to hold an open road race on October 9.

In stating the reasons for the calling of the meeting, the chairman, Mr. J. Cooksley, said that the arrangement which had been come to with Wanganui regarding the race ■ was that it should be held one year by Wanganui and the next by Manawatu, and vice versa. The Manawatu Club, however, was short of funds, and the race would mean incurring some expense. Wanganui, he thought, was willing to take over the management of the race, as it would take place during Empire Trade Week. After some discussion it was decided that in view of the expense it would be as well to leave the management of the race to Wanganui. It was then decided to hold an open road race to Levin and back, via Foxton, a distance of about 70 miles. It was, thought that as the Palmerston North-Wanganui road race was being held on October 5, and the WellingtonPalmerston North on October 12, that if the race was held on October 9 some good riders from other parts of the Dominion would be available. An attractive prize list was then drawn up by the meeting.
