VALUATIONS OBJECTED TO Wanganui, August 30. The Assessment Court sat in Wanganui to-day, when Mr. J. H. Salmon, SAL, dealt with objections to city valuations. Decision was deferred in the case of an objection lodged by the .Metropolitan Rugby Union against the valuation of Atkinson Park of eight acres, contain--111" three houses and a football ground. The annual letting value was put down at £250, and the Government valuation £6225. The union also objected to the annual letting valuation of £l5 on an adjoining section in Field Street. Salmon, S.M., presided at the Magistrate’s Court to-dav, when Ernest John Carver was, charged with being in a state of intoxication while in change of a motor-car. He was fined £l5, in default one month’s imprisonment, and his license was cancelled, no fresh license to be issued till 1931. The Land Purchase Board at Wellington has notified Mr. W. Bruce, of Wanganui, that a portion of the Philips Settlement at Fordell (about five miles from Wanganui), has been acquired under the group small farm settlement scheme. Thirteen sections were originally offered by Mr. George Philips, and after lengthy negotiations four sections were selected adjoining the railway line at Fordell. Each section comprises from 68 to 70 acres. The four successful applicants are fortunate in .securing highgrade dairy farms so near the city. The following have been selected to represent the Wanganui Technical College Old Boys’ fourth grade team, which will travel to Palmerston North tomorrow :—Barron, Beadle, Walker, Wilson, Bellve, Briscoe, Dennis, Gaye, Gilmour, Gordon, Inglis, Laird, Lind, Nesbit, Okeoffe, Peek, Sampson, Thompson. The New Zealand Referees’ Association badge is now held by four referees in Wanganui, word having been recently received that Messrs. Weatherhead and Philips have passed the N.Z.R.A. examination. The other two holders arc Messrs. W. G. Herd and R. Ward. The' latest addition to the Wanganui transport system is a tram recently purchased from Takapuna, Auckland, and converted in Wanganui into a one-man car. It had its trial run this morning to Castlecliff, and negotiated the numerous bends on the way in a most satisfactory manner. It is hoped by using these 48seater one-man cars to lessen considerably the cost of running expenses. The Wanganui Literary and Debating Society is steadily growing. A subject of interest at Wednesday night’s meeting was “Are librarians justified in banning ‘AU Quiet on the Western Front?’ ” After an animated discussion the affirmative side Won.
