PROMISES NOT FULFILLED MR. MAXTON’S COMPLAINT “IF I WERE PRIME MINISTER” (United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—-Copyright.) (“Tinies” Cables.) (Rec. August 5, 7 p.m.) London, August 5. “I can think of nobody benefiting by the Labour Government, but two reprieved murderers,” said Mr. J. Maxton, M.P., at (he Independent Labour Party’s conference. “I make the charge against the Socialists generally that they are adding their voice to the multitude declaring it impracticable to do things in which they believe. I and other members of the House of Commons representing industrial divisions are ashamed to face our constituents because Labour’s promises are not fulfilled. If I had been Prime Minister I. would have seen that the unemployed had an adequate allowance. I would have admitted Trotsky to Britain. I would have recognised Russia immediately. I would have re-established the housing subsidy, and raised the school age, so assiting the unemployed.”

DEMONSTRATIONS IN RUSSIA ‘DOWN WITH MACDONALD!’ (“Times” Cables.) (Rec. August 5, 8.15 p.m.) London, August 5. “The Times” Riga correspondent states that the Bolshevik authorities are staking Russian-wide demonstrations and protests against the “new rupture of Anglo-Soviet relations by the pseudo-Labour Government.” Factories and other establishments in Moscow, Leningrad, Kharkoff, and Artemovsk have organised meetings and passed identical resolutions, affirming their determination to give MacDonald’s manoeuvres the same response as was given to Chamberlain’s, concluding with the cry, “Down with MacDonald !”
