TUNNELLERS’ WAGES
PROPOSED REDUCTION DEFERRED A dispute over wages has occurred in connection witji work on the Tawa Flat deviation. Notification was received recently by some of the tunnel parties from the Public Works Department that, the rates paid per foot would be reduced by 32 per cent., for the reason that the work would be more speedily done under the new methods and by the use of the modern machinery ‘ustalled. lu file opinion of the tunnellers concerned, however, the new methods are no faste. than the old and more rapid progress cannot be made with them. A stop work meeting was held to consider the position, and on Saturday morning a deputation approached the Minister of Public Works (lion. E. A. Ransom). The Minister announced subsequently that lie had decided to defer the operation of the new scale of payment for a week. In company with the men be would inspect the work today and Ilion further' consider the question.
