HARMONIC SOCIETY

A SUCCESSFUL CONCERT There was scarcely a vacant seat in the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall on Saturday night when the Harmonic Society gave a most successful concert. Under the conductorship of Mr. H. Temple White, the choir gave a number of pleasing and tuneful part songs. Typically English were all these items,, among the most popular being airs from “The Beggar’s Opera,” most charmingly sung. “The Miller’s Wooing” (Eaton Faning) and “The Emigrant” (Armstrong Gibbs) were well received, and an unaccompanied part song, “Peggy Ramsay,” fully deserved the encore. A magnificent number was Dudley Buck’s “Hymn to Music,” in which the choir excelled itself. Very pleasing -and restful was “Nightfall in Skye” (Roberton), a song without words, in which the choir hummed the tune. “The Hero’s Rest,” a mournful number, was well rendered. Mr. George Stark singing the solo, “The Bridal Chorus,” from “The Rose Maiden” (Cowen), was one of the gems of the evening, and was sung with great vim. A most pleasing feature of the choral numbers was that the words could be heard distinctly. Tit: soloist for the evening was Miss Christina Ormiston (soprano'l whose numbers, creditably sung, were “Mimi’s Song.” from “Ln Boheme” (Puccini). “The Lotus Flower” (Schumann), and “Last Sunday Morn” (Brahms). As encores she sang “A Birthday” and “Butterfly Wings.” Assisting at the concert was the 2YA Orchestra, under the baton of Mr. M. Dixon. Their contributions were “If I Were King” (Adam), and a suite from “Hiawatha” (Coleridge-Taylor), both of which were excellently played. A most popular item was the flute and clarinet duet, “Lo! Here the Gentle Lark” (Bishop), played by Messrs. V. R. Brown nnd H Langtry, and . companied by the orchestra. A repetition was demanded. The accompanist was Mr. Clement Howe The Harmonic Society is to be congratulated on its splendid effort.
