MARIE STOPE’S LATEST BOOK

MEDICAL VIEWS IN COURT CASE. Medical opinions on Dr. Marie Stope’s latest book, "Enduring Passion, were given in the Magistrates Court yesteiday morning when the case was continued in which Norman Brown, of the firm of Richard Brown and Sons, Ltd., was charged with selling the publication. ‘ it being an indecent book." The case was brought on for hearing a week ago. but was adjourned in order to give the Magistrate an opportunity to read the work and to refer to authorities quoted by counsel. Chief Detective Lopdell prosecuted. Mr. W. B. Brown appeared for defendant. and Mr. E. P. Hay on behalf of the publishers. C. P. Putnam and Son. London. Dr. T. 11. Vulintine. Director-General of Health, stated be bad read "Enduring Passion," and had come to the conclusion flint it was a "perfectly beastly book.” , ... . In the opinion of Dr. Michael H. Watt, Assistant-Director-Goneral of Health, the book had no scientific value. Counsel for defendant submitted that V - police had not proved their case, and had not proved that it was not n scien tifi<- book. . Defendant, in the witness-box, said that he himself had never read the book until he received the summons. He had always sold it personally, and hud been assured that the look was not banned. He bad nlwavs been asked for the book by adults, and would never havo sold a

copy to a minor. He did not think that the youthful community bothered about Marie Stope’s works. They preferred the classics, or Edgar Wallace! After Mr. Hay had addressed the. Court on behalf of the publishers, the Magistrate (Mr. E. Page) reserved Ins decision.
