GROUP SETTLEMENT

“WAIRARAPA NOT SUITABLE” Masterton, August 2. Brief reports from the publicity and closer settlement committees were presented at this afternoon’s meeting of the Wairarapa Progress League. Mr. J. H. Handyside, ehairman of the publicity committee, reported th:,t pamphlets printed, “Beautiful Wairarapa,” had been published at the time of the visit of the Southland farmers. Advice had been received that a party of British farmers were to visit New Zealand next year, and would include Wairarapa in their itinerary. Owing to the shortage of time no exhibit had been forwarded to the Wellington Winter Show, but it was recommended that an exhibit be forwarded next year. Consideration had also been given to the question of forest reserves, but a full report on this matter would be ready for the next meeting of the league. Mr. D. McGregor (president) stated that consideration had been given to the question of closer settlement and group settlement, and a decision with regard to the latter had been arrived at, namely, that the Wairarapa was not suitable for group settlement. Therefore the committee had no recommendation to make. As far as closer settlement was concerned this question had been found to be of such importance, and requiring such careful investigation, that no definite recommendations had been formed. It was hoped to have something definite to put before the next meeting of the league, however.
