PAHIATOA NOTES

Pohiatou, August L Mr J. R. Curie, dairy instructor and grader for this district for the past 12 years, was entertained yesterday by members of tlie Bush District Factory Managers’ Association, and presented with a silver-mounted pyrex dish. Opportunity was taken to welcome Mr. Curie s successor, Mr. JI. Syron, late of Wanganui. Mr. Curie has been promoted to be chief grader at Wellingtou. The annual .meeting of the Pahiatua Racing Club was held last night. There was a large attendance, and the president (Mr. James McCardie) occupied the chair. In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, the president said that the past year bad been quite a successful out. The stakes had been increased a little, and the weather was ideal. Nominations and acceptances were good, and taking everything into consideration the club was to be congratulated on the very satisfactory financial position. The report and balancesheet were unanimously adopted. The election of officers resulted as follows President, Jlr. James JlcCardle; vice-presidents, Messrs. H. McSherry, P. Tulloch, and 8. V. Rodney; stewards, Messrs. C. Connell, G. D, H. Smith, A. McNeilage, R. J. Smith, W. JicDowell, F. Moore, F. Brltland, E. L. Harvey, D. Kelly, S. T. Tinney, E. Scandrett; honorary treasurer, Mr. H. JlcSherry; hon. surgeons, Drs. H. T. Dawson and H. Paterson; auditor, Mr. G. C. Miller. Mr. JI. J. O’Connor, late headmaster of the Pahiatua District High School, and now filling a similar position nt the Clyde Quay School, Wellington, has beeui elected a life member of the Pahiatua Swimming Club. Jlrs. Annie Gregory, an old and highlyrespected resident of the district, _ passed away ou Jlonday at the age of 85 years. The late Mrs. Gregory was born in Illstree. Herts, England. Her husband predeceased her some nine years ago. The deceased lady leaves three sons aud three daughters —Messrs. G. Gregory (Pahiatua), Richard Gregory (Clive), Arthur Gregory (Broadwood, Hokianga), Jfesdamcs Harland (Pahiatua), Gibson (England), and Cleeve (Wanganui). The funeral took place yesterday and was largely attended. A number of representatives of firms interested in the pig business met a subcommittee of the local branch of the Farmers’ Union on Tuesday afternoon, and discussed the question ot holding a weekly sale of fat pigs at Pahiatua and Jiangatatnoka. The buyers were fully in agreement with the proposal, and exnressed the opinion that it would be more satisfactory than the present system. It had been adopted in other centres and had given satisfaction.
