TAIHAPE NOTES

Taiha|>e, August 1. The body of a man named Edward Albert Leigh was discovered by Mr. Cornelius O'Hanlon in his woolshed at Wainui during the week, deceased having evidently succumbed to exposure, as his clothes were soaking and covered with mud. A bottle of methylated spirits was found near by. So far as it is known, he was last seen scrub-cutting for Mr. Pnerau Batley at Moawhango. Leigh was a returned soldier. In a representative ladies’ hockey match played on the Oval this afternoon. Taihape defeated King Country, before a fair number of spectators, by 1 goal (shot by Miss M. Currie) to nil. The visitors had decidedly the best of the game, and were unlucky to lose. At a meeting of the Taihape Boxing Association last evening, it was resolved to wind up the season with a tournament on August 22. Several members will be competitors at the Wanganui tourney on Monday. The winners of the Canadian mixed foursome on the local links recently were Mrs. M. Bradley and F. Race, with a net score ol 07. Miss Thelma O'Callaghan and W. Ross have displaced the leaders in the Raukura Cup, Miss K. Matthew and J. Evans, with a score of 73|. In the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, Albert Leighton pleaded guilty to two charges of theft involving £l2 17s. Cd., the property of the cemetery trustees. Accused, who was secretary to the trustees, leased part of the cemetery reserve to A. 11. McGuinness at an annual rental of £l, issuing receipts to the lessee. When the cemetery reserve was vested in the Borough Council in March last, no trace of the transactions was found in the receipt book. Leighton wns committed for trial in the Wanganui Supreme Court. A large crowd was present at a dance in the Town Hall this evening, in aid of the earthquake relief fund. Myriad streamers festooned the walls, and some hue coloured light effects were arranged by the borough electrical staff. Much praise is due to the town clerk (Mr. E. J. Price) and Mr. E. Loader, for their careful organisation, and the supper arrangements. due chiefly to Mrs. 11. .1. Bowater. Approximately £3O will be paid over to the fund.
