MAGISTRATE’S COURT
SUMMONS CASES. Summons cases in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday were heard before Mr. E. Page, S.M. Josiah Ede and Alexander Elliott were each fined 10s. for using unlicensed radio sets. Henry James Holmes, Archibald William Blandford and Jack Allan were each fined £1 for casting offensive matter in a public place. A plea of guilty was entered by Charles Francis Riley, who was charged with stealing timber valued at £2 10s., the property of the Fletcher Construction Co. It was stated that defendant had taken the timber from a yard belonging to the Fletcher Construction Co., and had said that he had taken it because he was in poor circumstances, and had not the means to purchase it. The Magistrate convicted Riley and admitted him to probation for twelve months. He was ordered to make restitution of the value of the stolen timber. The Magistrate decided to reserve his decision in the case against James Smith’s, Ltd., who were charged with promising to dispose of property by lottery or chance. The case concerned the publishing of a photograph, in a daily paper, of a group of people at a football match. Rings were painted round four of the heads, and the firm announced that those people who were “ringed” would be issued an order for 155., which could be applied to the purchase of a new suit or a new hat.
