CITY COUNCIL

GENERAL BUSINESS The Wellington City Council met last night, when there were present the Mayor (Mr. G. A. Troup). Councillors W. H. Bennett. R. A. Wright, W. J. Gaudin, T. C. A. Hislop, F. Meadoweroft. T. Forsyth, H. A. Huggins, M. F. Luekie, B. G. 11. Burn, C. 11. Chapman, M.P., G. Mitchell, R. McKeen. M.P., C. D. Morpeth, and W. J. Hildreth. The request of the British Red Cross Society (Wellington branch) to be granted a tramway pass for their official representative was declined. The request of the East Vogeltown Association for the provision of a bus service to their district was not complied with. Councillor Wright hoped the department would try and do something for these people, and would develop the bus service as feeders to the tramways. The Mayor said what was sought was a service right into town, and that would compete with the trams. Authority was granted for temporary improvements to be effected to Arthur Street until the paving or sealing of the street could be undertaken. An offer to dedicate free of cost two splays at Nairn Street, provided the council paid all legal and survey costs, was accented with thanks. Authority was granted for a closeboarded fence to be erected at the Corporation Yard, Oriental Parade, at a cost of £55. The city engineer was authorised to negotiate with the Railway Department with regard to the maintenance of the streets in the railway housing block, Ngaio. Consideration is to be given in framing next year’s estimates to sewer extensions at Evans Bay and Kio Roads at an estimated cost of £2647; and to effecting improvements to Weka Street. Miramar. Authority was granted for the laying of a stormwater drain at Seaview Terrace at an estimated cost of £l2l, property owners to contribute £6l ; and for the laying of a stormwater drain at Mansfield and Roy Streets at an estimated cost, of £126. provided property owners contribu'ed £64. Tlie formation of a footpath at Moana Road is to be proeeede.. with as soon as possible, provision having been made in the 1927 loan for the work. An application from the Sea Scouts' Association for permission to erect a drill hall on the reserve north of the baths nt Evans Bay was not approved. Plans are to be prepared and tenders called for Hie erection of n Indies’ rest room at tlie Botanical Gardens. An amount has been included in the estimates for this work.
