SOLDIERS’ MORTGAGES
POSTPONED RENTAL ARREARS Recently a deputation from soldier settlers in the Morrinsville district waited upon the Minister of Lands (Hon. G. W. Forbes) regarding certain matters connected with the renewal of current account mortgages and the remission of rental arrears postponed by the Dominion Revaluation Board. In a letter to Mr. F. Lye, M.P., the Minister states: . The question of the increase in the interest rate on mortgages is still under consideration. In connection witli the postponed rents . e contention was made that the fact of their being postponed was an admission that the amounts involved were not earned on the farms. Such a contention, however, cannot be admitted a :1 postponement is simply an indication that remission at the time was not justified and that the properties were coi-.idered capable of bearing the charge. My Department is unable to deal with this question on general lines, and it will be necessary ! ,f payment of the postponed debts is not effected on due date to consider eacli case on its merits. The administration is in the hands of the Land Board, which, in accordance with its usual functions, will deal with individual applications as circumstances seem to warrant."
