CITY COUNCIL MOTORCARS

♦. ■■— BETTER FOOTING NEEDED. The Works Committee last , night recommended to the City Council that in framing next year’s estimates consideration be given to the question of placing on a more economical footing the motorcar transport service of the council; that authority be granted for the replacement of three old motor-ears used bv the waterworks department for which provision had been made; that two old cars at present used in connection with paving work be replaced by the purchase of another motor-car and a light truck, the cost of the vehicles to be debited to the 1927 paving Ioan; and that o motor-car be purchased for the use of the officer in charge of the Miramar stormwater drainage scheme, the cost to be debited against the loan.

The chairman of the committee (Councillor R. A. Wright) said that the committee as a whole was not in favour of an increase in motor-cars, but it was convinced tharfthe overseer at Ariramar required one to get about his duties. Referring to the council’s motor-cars as a whole, the chairman said that quite a number were absolutely worn out. The position was a very serious oiie, and he thought it would bo as well if a small committee was set up to go into the question and see if some scheme could be evolved to reduce the motor-car expenditure. ■

The Mayor (Mr. G. A. Troup) said he had asked for a return as to tlie cost of running the council ears, the life of the vehicles, the mileage run, and other details. When that report was available a committee’ could then be set up. It. was necessary for the whole question to be gone into. ■ The recommendations were adopted.
