MARRIAGE LAW
AN AMENDMENT SOUGHT
Moving the second reading of the Marriage Amendment Bill in the House of Representatives yesterday, Mr. H. G. R. Mason (Auckland Suburbs) said it would be-a matter of astonishment to many members to learn that marriage to the deceased wifels niece was not legal in New Zealand. Sitch marriages had from time to time taken place, the parties being quite ignorant of the fact that they were transgressing any law. It would appear natural for the Government to take the matter up, as. it was inconsistent that such a marriage as mentioned should not be legal when marriage to the deceased wife’s sister was a valid institution. The Bill sought to remedy unsatisfactory legislation, in this,. respect. The Bill was read a second time.
