TONGAN ERUPTION

July 31, 9.30 p.m.) Suva, July 3L The steamer Tofua passed Niuafoou on Sunday. A European storekeeper reported that earthquakes preceded the eruption on July 5. Lava flowing from five to eight craters towards the sea practically wiped out the village of Fatu. Some portions are left intact Fifteen to twenty other craters are inactive. Lava reached within two miles of the village of Agata. The eruption is not fierce, the craters simply bubbling over, and threw stones etc., into the air fifteen to twenty feet. There were no casualties, the natives taking to the hiis. About two thousand coconut plantations were destroyed. Morris and Hedstrom and Burns, Philp and Co. lost copra and stores in the village of Fatu. The loss is estimated at £2OOO. The lava flow is from 50 to 100 yards wide. When the Tofua left active eruptions had ceased, only steam and smoke issuing from the craters. The inhabitants include a thousand Tongans, two European storekeepers, a French priest and two Sisters of Mercy.
