WET, COLD MONTH

JULY’S HEAVY RAINFALL MIDWINTER CONDITIONS Wellington has had good cause to regard the month just ended as the wettest and coldest July for a good many years. The rainfall for the month recorded at Kelburn, 6.91 inches, was well above the July average of five inches. It is the heaviest since July, 1916, when 6.42 inches were recorded, and it Is necessary to go back 17 years to find a heavier rainfall for the month, 9.46 Inches being registered in July, 1912. In July, 1892, however, the rainfall for the month totalled 12.17 inches. Rain fell on every day except six last month, the heaviest for 24 hours being 100 points (one inch) up till 9 a.m. on July 7; 90 points were recorded on the 13th, and 95 points on the 15th, the total for the eleven days ended 9 a.m., July 16, being 455 points. Hail fell on three days during the month. During July of last year 3.52 inches of rain was recorded. The total rainfall at Kelburn for the seven months of the year to July 31 is 30.59 inches, recorded on 09 days. As was to be expected the amount of bright sunshine recorded during the month was well below the average, being only 92 hours, compared with the July mean of 1074 hours. There were ten foggy mornings last month. The mean maximum temperature for th- month to Tuesday was only 50.7 degrees, compared, with the July average of 53.1 degrees; and the mean minimum temperature was 41.7 degrees, compared with an average of 42.3 degrees. The approximate mean temperature for the month was 46.2 degrees, compared with the July average of 47.7 degrees. Frost was recorded at Kelburn on five occasions last month, the lowest “grass” temperature recorded being 28.1 degrees in the morning of July 23. The mean barometrical pressure last month was fairly low, being 29.795 inches, compared with the July average of 29.923 inches. There was a noticeable absence of strong winds last month , the average daily run being 127 miles, compared with a normal for July of 203 miles per day. The greatest number of miles recorded for anv 24 hours during the month was 316 miles up to 9 a.m. qn July 14, due to a fairly fresh northerly wind.
