PRIEST’S ACTION CRITICISED
CHURCHIANITY AND CHRISTIANITY Dominion Special Service. Auckland, July 31. At the funeral at Ohura on Sunday of Mrs. Margaret Carlyon, a Roman Catholic, the officiating minister, the Rev. S. W. Golding (Church of England), said: “I know that I am echoing the sentiments of all present in offering to Mr. Carlyon and family our sincere sympathy in their bereavement. Mrs. Carlyon was a true Christian. She was a frienjj of mine. She was noted for her liberality and hospitality. There are hundreds here who can testify to that fact. When I was asked if I would bury Mrs. Carlyon I said that I would be pleased to do so, and in this respect I want to say that I was surprised and pained when I learned that a priest had refused to bury her (because she was married by a Church of England clergyman). I consider that his refusal to perform this service is reprehensible and deserves severe censure. It may b churchlanity, but It is not Christianity.”
