EDUCATION SYSTEM
PROPOSED REORGANISATION
Several questions relating to the proposed reorganisation of the education system were replied to by the Minister of Education (Hon. H. Atmore) in the House of Representatives yesterday. Replying to a query by Mr. D. Jones (Mid-Canterburyj as to when he intended to make his promised decision in connection with junior high schools, Mr. Atmore said that as already indicated a Select Committee upon education would be set up and evidence taken from the farming, technical, industrial, and professional groups with a view to ascertaining the best method of giving effect to the proposed policy. Mr. H. S. S. Kyle (Riccarton) asked whether the establishment of intermediate or junior high schools, as proposed by the Minister, would interfere with the present educational work carried on in high schools, and whether they would be responsible for reducing the number of* free places now obtainable at the high schools. The Minister said that in any proposed reorganisation it was not intended to withdraw any concession of free education. The interests of the teachers would be fully safeguarded.
