PREVALENT IN THE CITY Although the influenza , epidemic which is sweeping through Australia is (says a Brisbanq-paper) regarded as a mild form, medical men do-not regard it with contempt. Inquiries made in Sydney indicate that ’the outbreak is fairly prevalent, and nearly every shop and factory has a\ percentage of employees away for' the one reason., The police force had suffered considerably, most of the men who were affected having been absent from three days to a week. - Influenza has been very prevalent in Wellington during July.. Most of the factories, warehouses, ’ and big stores have had.their staffs denuded to a greater or less -.extent, and the complaint is still prevalent. -As a rule influenza commences 'by a lodgment In the throat, which sets up a slight inflammation. The usual aches attack ■eyery bone in the body, and the. throat affection ! settles down to a heavy cold in the . chest and. head. It seems impossible to dodge the ailment, but one, gentleman, who boasts that he. is. immune, attributes it to the practice of gargling salt and-water the first thing every" morning. With a salt cellar and a glass in the 1 bathroom this preventive seems simple. At least it can do no harm.
