BASKETBALL

MATCHES, NOTES, AND FIXTURES

(By

“Defence.")

Fortunately the weather cleared last Saturday to enable matches in the Wellington 'Basketball Association’s competitions to be continued. In the lower grades good play was to be seen, some of the teams having improved beyond the standard of their grades. Gilby’s—Both teams played hard throughout, but there was an absence of that finish and systematic combination that usually characterises the play of both sides. University goalthrowers were in excellent form, and made good use of all opportunities. I. Morice shooting well. The score stood at B—s at the interval. Gilby’s pulled up on their return to the field, aud there was a noticeable improvement in the play. A. Lithgow scoring some brilliant shots at goal. But University’s steady play Increased the score to 16—9 in their favour at the end of the game. Miss C. Armstrong was the referee. Y.W.C.A. v Y.Gym.—Splendid passing rushes were seep on both sides during the early part of this match. The play was fairly even throughout the first half, Y.W.C.A. leading by two goals. Y.Gymn. played somewhat uncertainly after the interval, and their goal-throwers were not in the best of form. Y.W.C.A. showed a great improvement on play earlier in the season and worked for their win at 9—5. M. Cheeseman did good work in the Y.Gvm. defence, while O. Lawlor and S. Robinson were responsible for much fast centre passing for Y.W.C.A. Miss M. E. Armstrong was the referee. Training College v. Wellington East. — Although Wellington East won by such a wide margin, the game was a fast one, and some excellent passing was done by Training College, who held on during the early part of the game, but tired after the interval. Wellington East goal-throwers were shooting very, accurately, and centre play was at times very clever. L. Sturrock played well for the winning team. Wellington East's swift line passing baffled the Training College players frequently. Wellington East accumulated goals. swiftly, and the score was 26—11 when the whistle went. Miss C. Armstrong was in charge. Kia Ora v. Wesley.—Kia Ora were not playing at their best on Saturday, combination at times being faulty and passes intercepted. Wesley’s play, too, was not up to standard. The first half was hard fought, Wesley leading by only two goals. Kia Ora made an effort to even matters during the second half, but Wesley, with good .judgment and accurate throwing drew ahead to 14—7. Miss M. E. Armstrong refereed the game. , REPRESENTATIVE TEAM. The remaining three representative players'have been selected. They are: P. Quinlan (centre), University; L. Sturrock (centre), Wellington East College Old Girls; and R. Rawlc (goal). Training College. Players previously selected were:— ’H. Roberts; "E. ' Belt R. Codyre,' D. McGurk, M. Line, E. Searfe, M. Parker, E. Cooke and D. McLean. CLUB NOTES. Y.W.C.A. There has been an all-round improvement in the club of late. On Saturday the Senior A team had a good win against Y.\ Gym. at 9—5. ' The Senior B game against Technical College was well contested. Technical deserving their win. G. Cooper was outstanding in the Technical centre third. Good shooting and quick short passing was a feature of the game. Y.W.C.A. defence played well, but the goals would do better to play more openly instead of crowding behind their opponents. Both teams found the red lines of the Technical grounds indistinct and the referee’s whistle was kept busy. Mr. Cowie controlled the game. In the third grade Knox were defeated by 10—2 with good centre passing and goal work. Fourth B are very proud of their victory of 6—2 over Whitehead and Pears, hitherto unbeaten. A sixth grade match was lost by playing short and a hard fought seventh grade match was lost by only one point. The eighth grade defeated Wesley Aroha-Noa. The Y.W.C.A. Taita, firth grade team have, unfortunately, been forced to withdraw from the competitions through the loss of players. REFEREES’ NOTES. Senior B Grade. Training College v. Knox.—This was a good, fast game, but Training College are not as strong a team as Knox. P. Hamilton, E. Beynon, D. Eagles, and A. Matthews played excellently for Knox, whilst A. Lewis, M- Pennington and M. Bell were worthy of mention for Training College. Third Grade. Kirkcaldie and Stains v. Wellington College Old Girls.—Kirkcaldies proved victors after a very fast and hardly contested game. The defence of the winning team was very sound and repeatedly defeated the College goalie’s efforts to score. The game was very open, the ball passing from end to end of the court repeatedly. Y. Gym. v. Knox, Island Bay.—A fast and dean game. Y. Gym. were in great form and won by a big margin. Knox played a hard game but were unfortunately two players short. Fonrth Grade. Wesley, Karorl y. Y. Gym.—Neither team played up to usual standard but perhaps the reason lay in the fact that both teams played short. Kia Kaha v. .Tames Smiths.—Kia Kaha won by a wide margin. They are an excellent team for fourth grade. Fifth Grade. 'Varsity v. Wellington Technical. —This was a very even game, the pace was very hot from beginning to end and 'Varsity fully deserved their win. Sixth Grade. Northland v. Knox.—Knox girls played * very good game, but the Northland girls were too tall for them and by giving high passes gained possession of the ball every time. St. Mark's Rangers v. Y.W.C.A., Taita.— St. Mark's Rangers were the winners by a narrow score, but the game was inclined to be rough. Eighth Grade. Y.W.C.A. v. Wesley.—Wesley were defeated by four goals but showed promise of better play. With a little more practice they would make a strong team, FIXTURES FOR SATURDAY. Senior A.—'Varsity v.
