BIBLE-CLASS MOVEMENT

MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. At the monthly meeting of the Wellington Inter-Bible Class Council delegates attended representing the Anglican, Presbyterian, Methodist and Baptist Young Men’s and Young Women’s Bible Class movements, also the Y.M.C.A. A report was' presented dealing with the recommendations of a very successful conference held at Lower Hutt on the King’s Birthday, at which over sixty Bible Class leaders of the various denominations attended. One of these recommendations requested the Bible Classes and Christian Youth organisations in the Wellington South and’ Island Bay districts to engage in experiments in certain phases of co-operation.. It was reported that a rally of representatives had been held . subsequently, and arrangements made for the early commencement of the scheme. Mr. C. Gardiner and Miss Elsie Smith presented a report on the recent interdenominational musical, elocutionary, and oratorical competitions. These were held on Saturday, June 29, and Monday July 1, and attracted large audiences. One hundred and nine entries were received in 12 sections, representing 21 different churches. Of the church groups competing,. St. Giles’s Presbyterian Church, Kilbirnie, secured the highest number of points, viz., 15; Taranaki Street Methodist second, with 10 points; and Bcrhampore Baptist third, with 9 points. Denominationally, Presbyterian gained 39, Baptist 20 and Methodist 20. Thp judges, Messrs. H- Temple White and Clement May, spoke of the high standard of the competitions. The Inter-Bible Class'Council, at its meeting, decided to organise a second series of competitions during May Of next, year. It was reported that the young men and young women of the Church of Christ Bible Classes had decided to apply for affiliation. This, was granted with enthusiasm.

Among the future projects outlined was the Bible Class leaders’ ‘raining course, commencing on August 21, in which there were to be leading speakers who would give Bible talks, also demonstration talks on play reading, social programme; organised games, ; folk dancing, etc. Ono period will also be given over to a forum for discussion of Bible Class leaders’ problems. Arrangements have been made for a rally of young men and women in the Town Hall, Wellington, on September 22, when His Excellency the Governor-Gen-eral, will deliver a farewell message to the Christian youth of Wellington. The Mayor, Mr. G. A. Troup, will preside at this gathering. It was decided by the council to restrict the attendance at this meeting to young men and women only. Tffie members of Toe H. had offered to attend to the ushering arrangements. The offer was accepted with the keenest appreciation.
