(Rec. June 18, 10.55 p.m.)
Cape Town, June 18. A serious encounter between police and civilians on one side and natives on the other occurred in the heart of Durban at midday. The natives objected to the preparation of food by other than their own compatriots. All traffic to Berea was suspended, vast crowds watching the contest. Europeans complicated matters by attacking the headquarters of the native I-C. Union.
Neighbourhoods in which Europeans were isolated were attacked by natives. One was killed. This enraged the crowd, who broke through the police cordon and shots were fired on both sides, but the only injuries sustained were caused by flying brickbats.
