NUMEROUS CHARGES Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, June 18. With a somewhat formidable group of charges, John Reginald Ellis, a painter, aged 30, appeared before Messrs. S. Abraham and G. S. Rumble, J.P.s m the Palmerston North Magistrates Court today He was charged with the forgery of a cheque for £6 10s. at Wellington on April 18, with the theft of a ring valued at £1 and £1 in money at Palmerston North on April 20, with obtaining from V. Corke on April 27 at Palmerston North £5 10s. cash by presenting a valueless cheque, and also charged with obtaining from Collinson and Cunninghame goods to the value of £5 10s., from J. Scheldt. £4 10s. cash, from A. E. Lynch, £5 10s. cash, from A. Levy tobacco and £7 10s. cash, from G. H. Inkpen, goods and £o 10s. cash, from S. Napier £6 10s. worth of goods and cash, from J. Boucher io 10s. 1 worth of goods and cash, from John Cobbe, Ltd. (Feilding), £5 10s. worth cf goods and cash, from Rayforth and Co. (Feilding), goods and £5 10s. cash, from E Fidder (Feilding), goods and £5 10s. cash all by means of valueless cheques drawn on the Bank of Australasia. On the charge of forgery accused was remanded to appear at Wellington. A plea of guilty was entered to the charge of stealing a ring and £1 in cash at Palmerston North. Senior-Detective Quirke explained that this was one of a series of offences for which accuscu was now serving a sentence. He suggested that a concurrent term of imprisonment oe imposed. This the Bench agreed to and imposed a concurrent term of one month s imprisonment. . ' The series of charges involving the passing of valueless cheques was then preferred against accused. After a number of witnesses had been heard, accused pleaded guilty to all charges, and was committed to the Supreme Court at Wellington for sentence.
