RICCARTON NOTES

NOMINATIONS FOR TRENTHAM

Dominion Special Service. Christchurch, June 18. The trial grass was available this morning and after a hard frost this provided somewhat holding going. The majority of the horses engaged at the South Canterbury meeting were in evidence, but there was nothing outstanding in the fast work executed. Airplane comfortably beat Quick Plunge in a task over live furlongs, taking Imin. Gsec.

Battle Colours, looking well, strode over half a mile in 52 2-jjsec. Full Feather recorded Imin. 5 3-ssec. for live furlongs, and his stable mate, Sudden Storm showed attractive form by galloping half a mile in 49 2-ssec. Hurly Burly, who has recently rejoined the active list, occupied 59 l-ssee. for the same journey.

Stately was seen to advantage in a smart sprint over four furlongs in 50sec. Arikiwai and Beleaire ran over the same ground in 50 2-ssec. and Limerick and Paquito registered 50 l-ssec. for a like task.

Magna Charta, who will not be seen out again until the Wellington meeting, reeled off half a mile in 52sec. Countersign and Commenter finished together at the end of seven furlongs traversed in Imin. 32 3-ssec.

Marsham easily accounted for Nightdew over a mile journey, taking Imin. 49sec. Honeycomb ran five furlongs in Imin. sscc., the last half in 50 l-ssec. Lord Ranald executed a useful gallop over seven furlongs occupying Imin. 37sec. Aberfeldy and Gala Day accomplished a similar task over a mile in Imin. 48 2-ssec.

Malmsey was not extended in a sevenfurlong gallop, running home the last four in 51 2-ssec.

Nine of Spades registered 53 l-ssec. for half a mile.

Grand Song and Zeuxis went pleasingly over seven furlongs covered in Imin. 35sec.

Bonrose had no difficulty in galloping half a mile in 50 3-ssec. This filly should add to her winning record at Timaru.

Radiate was restricted to easy work. He is to fulfil his enagement at Timary on Thursday and will be ridden by E. Shaw.

The only jumping during the morning was that executed by Oriflamb (I. Tilson), who negotiated a round of the country In an attractive manner.

Mr. J. H. Watson, of Kaituna, is having handled at H. Nurse’s stable a well-grown yearling by Paladin from Sunny Brook, by Sunny Lake from Arai-te-Uru. The youngster is a brother to the same owner's two-year-old Sunny Pal, who showed promise early in the season, but was turned out to finish growing. Unfortunately he recently met with an accident in the paddock, but it is hoped to put him into work again shortly. Riccarton stables are represented in the list of nominations for the Wellington Racing Club's winter meeting by the following: Amorist, Magna Charta, Audience. From the point of view of those specially Interested in betting, there are two outstanding articles in the current official calendar. They deal with the form and chances of horses engaged at Hawke's Bay and the South Canterbury Jockey Club meeting at the week-end. The racing at Napier Park last Friday and Saturday should throw some light on the prospects at Hawke’s Bay, and a full report of that meeting appears in the issue under reference. Another item which will have a wide Interest is the nominations for the three-day winter fixture of the Wellington Racing Club, which is sandwiched in between the Great Northern gathering at Ellerslie and the Grand Nationals and Winter Cup at Riccarton. Added attractions to the turf section are a story of the record of Reigh Count, the American cham-’ pion, who was sent to England specially to try to lift the Ascot Gold Cup, the “Referee’s” Australian letter, and the list of winning owners, sires, horses jockeys and trainers in Otago for the season 1928-29. An article on famous brood mares from the pen of P. E. Baldwin also appears. The light harness section is equally strong. The Auckland Trotting Club’s winter meeting, which concludes the season iu the north, is dealt with by the "Referee’s" Auckland representative. “Miles” has a disquisition on “prospects” for the light-harness derbies, along with an old-time budget culled from files of years ago and topical notes from headquarters. A survey of West Australian form, where the sport is booming, is another feature.

In the general sports section will be found the reply of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association to strictures published in the “Referee" regarding the official attlude toward the recent junior national tourney scheme.
