The district of Collinywood must have been a favourite resort of the Maoris in times past (says the Nelson “Mail”). The splendid benches which stretch from Collingwood to Farewell Spit were evidently the scene of many a royal feast foi practically al] the way there are mounds of pibi shells. These mounds are of considerable size and extent, and from time to time the farmers have burnt the shells and applied the burnt lime as a top-dressing to their paddocks. Some of the older ’residents can still remember the time when there were many Maoris living in the district, but now they have practically all gone. Relics of those days are from time to time brought to light, and there are some good collections in the district, but what must surely be a record “And” has taken place within the last few days in Triangle A 7 alley. a secluded spot about 14 miles from Collingwood opening out to the bay. A resident, who was ploughing a paddock which runs parallel with the bench, brought to light a curious and varied collection of Maori relics with the plough. There are axes. etc., of all sizes, some splendid examples of Maori skill and patience, and others in various stages of manufacture. There wns great excitement when it became known thnt the plough wns unearthing these muchprized axes, and soon there wns an excited and eager crowd of followers of the plough. Triangle Valley must have been a particularly fnvourit’ *’>ot for the Maori. The ploughing reveals also I hat here many a feast has taken place. There are large fish bones, shells and what are possibly human remains everywhere.
