COMPENSATION CLAIM

£3500 AWARDED A case commenced on Monday in the Supreme Court wherein Patrick James Hannigan and John Campbell Francis, owners of property in Ghuznee Street which has been taken by the Wellington City Corporation for the purposes of street widening, proceeded against the corporation for £5OOO compensation, was resumed yesterday morning. The property is at 9 Ghuznee Street and has a frontage of 35ft. and a depth of lOOfty His Honour Mr. Justice MacGregor presided. With him as assessors were Messrs. J. S. Harcourt and J. M. Dale. Messrs. W. E. Leicester and H. J. V. James appeared lor plaintiffs, and Mr. J. O’Shea (city solicitor) for the corporation. In evidence, Colin Campbell Crump, valuer and builder, said he valued the land concerned at £lOO per foot frontage and the buildings at £866. Called by Mr. O’Shea, Daniel Frederick Dunlop, laud agent, said four years ago a property on the corner of Marian and Ghuznee Streets sold for £6O per foot on a reserve of £5O per foot. He valued the land in the present case at £BO per fooL and tho buildings at (rcughly) Cross-examined, witness said he did not think the land in Ghuznee Street would increase in value by the widening of Taranaki Street. Dunbar Sloane, land agent, said the property in the present case witness valued at £3150, on the basis of £9O per foot. After retirement, the Court awarded £3500 as compensation, with costs £75, together with disbursements and witnesses' expenses £l5 15s.
