Absent-mindedness as a personal failing was ruefully admitted by Mr. H. E. Vaile, candidate for the Auckland Mayoralty, in the course of an address (reports the “Herald”). “I have often been taken to task for not recognising my friends in the street,” he said. “Quite recently, ■while walking down Queen Street with my daughter, a lady bowed to me in a very amiable fashion across the road. I raised my hat, and then turned to my daughter. ‘Who is that lady who seems to know us so well?’ I asked. ‘Don’t be silly,’ she replied; ‘that is mother.’ ”
