CARGO TONNAGE INCREASES FACILITIES IMPROVED Dominion Special Service. . Nelson, March 7. The chairman of the Harbour Board (Mr. H. R. Duncan), in the course of the annual report, presented yesterday, stated that tlie year closed with a surplus of receipts over expenditure of £2201 11s. 5d., as compared with a deficiency of £2501 6s. 4d. for the corresponding period last year. The general reserve fund stands at £ll,OOO, and the surplus. of assets over liabilities amounts to £51,503. Three important works were undertaken during the last twelve months, namely, the deepening of the berthage wharf area, the deflection of the Maitai, and the reclamation of an area of four acres. The shipping tonnage of arrivals for the year ended September 30, 1928, was 353,115 tons, as against 306,034 tons on the regiter for 1927, showing an increase of 47,081 tons for the year. The imports of cargo for the year were 92,533 tons, and the exports 34,551 tons, making a total of 127,084 tons, as against 82,571 tons, imports, and 31,667 tons exports—a total of 114,238 tons for 1927,.
