A BUSY MINISTER

HON. A. J. STALLWORTHY

ON DUTY

On Saturday afternoon the Minister of Health (Hon. A. J. Stallworthy) opened a garden party under the ausspices of the Wellington Young Women’s Bible Class movement. He warmly commended the four-square Gospel of the organisation, which aimed at building up the physical, mental, social, and spiritual life of its members. The Minister said he was not one of the croakers at the so-called revolt of youth. Life was not a studgy thing. It was a progression. It could not be confined in a cast-iron past. Its impulse was to the future. In a world rapidly being; remodelled by moving sciences, one could not expect boys and girls to be just as their parents were. He had no fear for young New Zealand. Those who were building the essentials of character upon the principles of humanity’s greatest Book could safely be left to express their own individuality, even in the most unorthodox way, without danger to society. Later the Minister took advantage of the invitation of the principal of the Hutt High School to address over a thousand people at a garden party. Later; in company with Mr. W. T. Strand (Mayor of Lower Hutt), he visited the Hutt Valley athletic sports and spoke at the prize-giving. Yesterday, in company with Mr. C. M. Luke, chairman of the board, the Minister visited the Wellington Hospital. He was impressed with the serious overcrowding of some of the larger wards, and the fact that in addition there are over 100 cases on the waiting list anxious to be admitted to hospital.

The Minister will visit Porirua today to open the Young People’s Conference of the New Zealand Alliance, tomorrow and on Thursday will visit Avondale Mental Hospital at Auckland, and Kingseat on Friday, returning to Wellington on Saturday. ,
