S. LAY’S RECORD JAVELIN THROW MISS BARRON WINS CHALLENGE RACE Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, March 2. Competing in the javelin throw at the Manawatu Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club’s annual sports meeting at the Showgrounds this afternoon 8. Lay bettered his Australasian record made in Wellington last week by 10ft. 6in. Though there was a strong wind blowing most of the afternoon, there was an absolute absence of any breeze when Lay made his record-breaking throw, hurling the javelin 216 ft. sJin. Entries for the meeting were excellent, and the good handicapping made for fine finishes. The times, however were not reliable because of the wind, which changed frequently during the afternoon. The tracks were hard and fast. Miss Norma Wilson, who was to have raced against Miss P. Stewart (Wairoa), was unable to make the trip down because of ill-health, her place in the special challenge race being taken by Miss M. Barron, who had no difficulty in winning from Miss Stewart by several yards. T. Oakley was late in arriving, but came in time to win the last two cycle races: The Glaxo Cup. for competition amongst primary schools, was won by Terrace End with a first, two seconds, and a third.
