NEW SOUTH WALES COAL CRISIS

STATEMENT BY MR. BAVIN MISAPPREHENSION CLEARED AWAY Australian Press Association. (Rec. February 26, 11.10 p.m.) Sydney, February 26. The Premier Mr. Bavin) has returned to Sydney from the Canberra coal conference. He stated that the miners’ delegates had agreed to submit to the combined unions without recommendation the question whether they would accept a shilling a ton reduction in wages if chartered accountants after an examination of the coal owners’ affairs proved Mr.. Bavin’s figures relating to the owners’ profits were correct.

Mr. Bavin added: “It was quite obvious that some of the opposition to our scheme for a reduction in the price of coal was based on misapprehension.” He said he sincerely hoped with the Prime Minister that the miners would see the wisdom of adopting the proposals without delay. It is stated to-day in Sydney that the Northern Colliery Association will not withdraw its notices of dismissal to the miners, which expire on March 2. Mr. McDonald, the chairman, declared that they were at the parting ,of the ways.
