CASES

Police cases were heard before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M.; in the Magistrate's Court yesterday morning. William Whitehouse, a greaser, was charged with deserting from the steamer Northumberland. It was stated that accused had now got a steady shore job as a mechanic. Saying that these desertions were not to be encouraged, the Magistrate fined Whitehouse £2 and ordered him to pay £2 10s. expenses to the shipping company. When Joseph McKee, a seaman, aged 22. appeared on a charge of being drunk and disorderly In that he habitually consorted with reputed thieves, the Magistrate stated that he had had the accused before him in Auckland. Ills counsel intimated that McKee had been in hospital. “Yes, and most probably the gaol hospital! next,’’ commented Mr. Hunt abruptly. On account of the accused's youth, however, he would be given another chance. McKee was convicted and ordered to come up tor sentence within twelve months. Lack of sufficient lawful means of support. and idle and disorderly behaviour, brought Joseph Polkinghouse, a tailor, 39 years of age, before the Court. He was convicted and ordered to come up tor sentence within six mouths if called upon. BY-LAW CASES In the afternoon Mr. Hunt presided over the By-law Court. , , „ For speeding, Charles Levin, Stanley Evaus. and Ray Ingram, were each fined £2, and Harry Braham (on each of two charges), William James Gaudin, Lewellyn A. Jones, and Arthur Hay, were fined a corner cost Kathleen P. Blundell £l. . A John R. Sullivan was fined £5 for exceeding the speed limit on a motor-cycle, and 10s. for not having a driver’s license. For falling to signal when turning a motor-car, Reginald E. Baker was convicted and ordered to pay costs. Dangerous driving.cost James H. Cullinghain £5, and his license was endorsed for six months.
