A very interesting fish was recently on view in an Invercargill shop. The length is seven feet, the girth four feet, while the fish has a black back and white belly, but no dorsal fin (states the “News ). On the top of the head is a blow-hole such as is seen in whales. The fish was found high and dry on the beach at Sandy Point, New River Heads, at about 5 o’clock the other morning, and was taken to Invercargill. Various guesses were made as to its species, but so far no definite information is available. It seems probable, however, that the fish is of the whale species, and it. bears a striking similarity in shape to the Beluga, or white whale, which is found in the North Atlantic regions.
