OPOSSUMS

Sir, —Australia has one of the most varied and extensive collections of birds on the globe. It has for centuries contained millions of opossums, and there Is not the slightest evidence that the birds have been molested. I have kept many opossums in captivity for years, and find that whilst in exceptional circumstances they are omnivorous, they are almost entirely herbivorous. In fact it ' is their love of roses that so often results in their, destruction. I can always bring an opossum out in the daytime by dangling a rose bloom In front of him. It will be a matter of great surprise If it is found that he can cause destruction at all analogous to that caused by stoats, weasels and ferrets. ■He is regarded in Australia from the point ot view of birds as quite harmless.—l am, • tC ” JAMES W. BARRETT, < President Town Planning (and National; Parks) Association, Victoria. _ February 15.
