SWAMP DEVELOPMENT

LARGE WAIKATO SCHEME. By Telegraph .—Press Association. Hamilton, February 12. A meeting of the Swamp Development League was held yesterday. The chairman (Mr. A. M. Bisley) said that the present was a time favourable for pressing for the development of the extensive Woodlands swamp, at north-east Hamilton, as the new Government was seeking the best opportunities for a land settlement scheme. If it was undertaken it would be the beginning of the development of swamp areas in the vicinity of .Hamilton, totalling about 80,000 acres. A Government report prepared some years ago favoured the Woodlands scheme. Mr. Gribble said that he had interviewed the Minister and the Undersecretary of Lands and various officials, and found that all were favourable. The Under-Secretary had said that it was the best proposition on his books.

The meeting resolved tp make urgent representations to the Government and local bodies for the immediate development of this area.
