WELLINGTON CENTRE CARNIVAL . ) CAMERON BREAKS 100YDS NEW ZEALAND RECORD 440YDS TO C. CLARIDGE Keen interest was manifested in the swimming carnival held at Te Aro Baths last Saturday under the auspices of the Wellington Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association. There was a large attendance of spectators and Wellington's crack distance and sprint swimmers were in full force. A much appreciated innovation was the laning-off of competitors, thus enabling them to swim straight and also to allow of their being more easily followed by spectators. The success of the carnival was due to solid workers, especially Messrs. P. Coira, McNee, and M. Sommerville, and J. Calnan. The programme opened with the 220yds breastroke trial, which K. Spry, of the Wellington Club, won by a fair margin from A. Hepburn and S. Wright. The chief event of the afternoon was •the 100yds. centre championship, in which such well-known swimmers as D. Lindsay (Olympic representative), W. Cameron, C. Claridge, G. RixTrott, and J. Blakeley competed. Cameron took the lead almost from the start and went on to cover the distance in the New Zealand record time of 564-ssec., clipping 3-ssec. off Norman Dowsett’s time established at Auckland in 1926. Claridge finished second four yards behind the winner. Had Cameron been pushed at any stage he would, in all probability, have bettered his time. " Unfortunately for the winner, a dispute * has arisen as to the height of the starting board from the waterline, it being claimed that at the time of the race the board was li inches short of the regulation 30 inches. The matter will be decided at a meeting to-night. Of the six who entered for the 440yds. centre championship only three started, namely G. Rix-Trott, J. Blakeley and C. Claridge. Claridge took the lead from the start, but Rix-Trott soon breasted him and kept with him to the first turn. , The second lap saw Claridge increase bis lead slightly, and at the end of the fourth lap he was two yards ahead. At the eighth lap Claridge led by twenty yards. Interest now centred in the fight'between Rix-Trott and Blakelev for second place, the former sprint: ing over the last forty, yards to beat Blakeley by five yards. As Claridge was not extended it was a slowly-swum race, the time being smin. 50 4-ssec. The Boys’ 50yds. handicap was cancelled. Spectators greatly appreciated the diving exhibitions given by W. Hicks. D. Mulverhill, J. Penman, J. Foot and D. Tuppen. The 100yds. ladies race saw a walkaway for Miss K. Miller. A great race was witnessed in th" 50 yds. ladles’ race, Miss Collett winning after an exciting finish in 43 2-ssec.

Miss Hall, who was second, is a swimmer of promise. DETAILED RESULTS 220 Yards Breaststroke Trial.—K. Spry (Wellington Club), 1; A. Hepburn (Worser Bay.), 2; S. Wright (Lyall Bay), 3.
