ALSATIAN WOLF HOUNDS
Sir, —I have read with interest several letters in your paper re Alsatian wolf hounds and wish to heartily endorse the views expressed by Sir. Thomas Mackenzie. . I have most unpleasant recollections of a certain Alsatian hound owned by a man who once lived at Heretaunga. I had occasion to go for a walk one day through Barton’s paddocks at Trentham. The hound and his owner were living in Barton Road. I had finished ray walk through the paddocks and was quietly going past the houses in Barton Road when I was so unfortunate ns to encounter the hound. There was no doubt he did not like me. Perhaps he knew I had been trespassing, but in any ease I was glad I had some knowledge of dogs, and by an extraordinary stroke of luck a short length of 2 x 2 in my right hand. I did not inform the owner of the incident as I heard that the hound’s ferocity was known, and later I heard it had been destroyed. I trust that for the protection of back-country stock the breed will be excluded from this country. —I am, etc., “COWMAN."
