MAJOR SEGRAVE’S NEW SPEED CAR
ESTIMATED COST, £15,000
MILLIONAIRE TO MEET THE BILL (United Press Association.— By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (United Service.) (Rec. Jauary 12, 5.5 p.m.) London, January 11. The “Daily Mail” publishes further details of Major Segrave’s new speed car named the “Golden Arrow.” It says that eighteen months ago a millionaire visited Major Segrave and said: “I hear you want to get back the record. Go ahead and get a car built. Tell the designer to spend what he likes and to spare no money in making the car as safe as is humanly possible.” Major Segrave then commissioned a motor engineer named Captain Irving, aged 42, a North Countryman, to carry out the task, and it is expected that the car will cost £15,000. It is estimated that the car will cover 150 miles during its trial racing, including run-ups and slow-downs, equivalent to one hour’s work. It will probably not be wanted thereafter. The cost works out at £250 per minute. Practically every part will be made of best English steel, even the smallest nuts being specially turned. It is designed for a maximum speed of 280 miles per hour, but fixed gear ratios limit the speed to 240 miles per hour. The cockpit is armour-plated, and Major Segrave will be strapped therein, so thi t even if it overturns, which is considered unlikely owing to its low centre of gravity, the plating will take the shock.
