A recent visitor to Rotorua, who ‘"is always observant stated that the exterior of the bath-houses at the famous thermal resort was not so bad, but the interiors were a disgrace to the Government. Inside the buildings there was an air of dilapidation and neglect that was the reverse of cheering. The visitor said that if the Government were to spend £5OO on paint the bath premises would be much more enticing than they are. Everything about Whuka spelt decay and rottenness, and as a place to visit it was becoming one to be ashamed of rather than gloried in. He suggests rhe advertisement: “Come and see our thermal wonders, and our rotten bridges and tumbledown fences 1”
