MAINTENANCE OF ROADS

USER SHOULD PAY Road users, in the opinion of the Makara County Council, should pay for the upkeep of the roads. At yesterday’s meeting a letter was received from the Tauranga County Council stating that that body was in favour of an increase' in the petrol tax, and desiring the local council, if it fell in with these views, to make representations to the Minister of Public Works and the Parliamentary representative of the electorate. Mr. 13. F. Windley (chairman) put the motion that the council should support the Tauranga resolution. Councillor W. Sloane expressed disapproval, pointing out that ratepayers were rightly taxed on account of the benefit accruing to their land from the improved access. The motion was opposed also by Councillor R. G. Mexted. After some discussion, the council decided to support the resolution.
