ALLEGED INTOXICATED DRIVER
A CASE DISMISSED. George Campbell Cooper, a taxi proprietor, aged 42, pleaded not guilty in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday to. being drunk in charge of a motor-car in Customhouse Quay on the night of December 23 last. Evidence called by the police went to show that the accused was found asleep at the wheel of the car. He was taken to the central station in a drunken condition, and though he admitted that he was the worse for liquor, be stated that he was not in charge o' the car. For the accused, Mr. J. Scott called evidence to show that although Cooper owned the car, he had riot been driving it for some time. He was running some side-shows at the Petone car-' nival, and had engaged another to drive his car. Having hgd too much to drink on the night in question, he saw his car in Customhouse Quay, and was only waiting to be driven home.' The accused himself had no intention of driving, as he knew he was intoxicated. Sub-Inspector Lander stated that, although Cooper’s car was in the police yard from the time he was arrested, which was after 11 p.m., until the next morning, no one had called to get J the vehicle.
